And Now For Something That Actually Happened To Me…Kind Of [Korea, My Life, Paintbrush Untitled] — Wyatt @ 15:52 pm

Police Cops

On Friday afternoon, Jinhui and I had to go to the violent crimes division of our local police station so she could get fingerprints taken. This is what happened…if movies like 살인의 추억 and countless other Korean cop movies are to be believed.

  1. Long intro short - I study Japanese and enjoy your blog. I have a question.
Uhm, Perhaps I’m missing something, but I just had to ask - why is that angry policemen shouting “18 Year(s)” at you? Also, the cute sun with rays coming off it in the window is really a charming touch.

  2. 十八年 when read in Korean is 십팔년 (shippalnyeon), 씨팔년 (sshipalnyeon) is Korean for “Fuckin’ Cunt / Fuckin’ Bitch.” In my desire to keep it clean, I replaced the dirty word with a similar sounding G-rated word. Kind of like in the 80’s when in Ferris Bueler’s Day Off on network television it mention sticking a lump of coal “up Cameron’s FIST.”

  3. Ah. I saw Ferris on TV this past weekend and it did not use that version. It actually uttered the word “ass.” I think it probably had to do with the fact that it was being shown on Comedy Central. That aside, in my 20 years on this planet I have only ever seen the “fist” version shown on TV. I was shocked and awed.
